Sleeper Trains

Sleeper trains not only make for a wonderful travel experience, they also maximize your time and save you money.

At today's travel speeds, most Midwestern cities pairs could be linked with sleeper trains departing after dinner and arriving before the start of the business day. Sleeping quarters make the most lavish first class international jet seem like a cramped bus and you save on hotel costs. These trains would offer a highly productive alternative to flying and redundancy in case of a national emergency.

Sleeper trains are also the backbone of Amtrak's system.

A single run of the Empire Builder, for example, serves nearly a thousand city pairs in just one trip, linking small towns with big cities and each other. Few of these connections would be affordable without the base-revenue provided by the sleeping car passengers.

Amtrak's sleeper trains are already highly productive. Adding seats to existing trains, adding a second (or third) daily round trip and working with the railroads to eliminate bottlenecks and choke points is an inexpensive way to reduce auto trips quickly.
