The Corridors: Northwest Corridor
There are two related proposals for new trains service linking Chicago to Rockford and western Illinois.
1. Extended Commuter Rail: Several communities in Boone and Winnebago counties are working to extend Metra's Milwaukee West route using Union Pacific (UP) trackage. A Federal Transit Administration alternatives analysis is underway.
2. Intercity: The Illinois Department of Transportation recently completed a feasibility study for basic service linking Chicago to Rockford, Freeport, Galena and Dubuque. The study compared three potential routes. The Canadian National route was chosen. Two construction seasons will be required to begin service.
