Modernized Amtrak service (also called "regional trains" or "emerging high speed rail" by the federal government) is needed to provide broader geographic coverage beyond the high-speed lines.
With smart and focused investments in new track, signals and rolling stock, Amtrak service can be upgraded to at least 90 miles an hour β shortening travel times and allowing more convenient schedules.
With the exception of some projects in Florida and California, the bulk of the $8 billion rail stimulus funds went to Amtrak modernization projects.
Itβs a smart and overdue investment that we hope will accelerate.

Americans time and again have shown they will choose the train if given that option. When Illinois doubled Amtrak service a few years ago β offering more frequent schedules at more convenient times β ridership itself doubled.
